Most stars in the system are read as something a person does. 天同 (tiān tóng) is read as something a person receives — ease, help arriving on time, a life that does not have to be fought for. It is the fourteen main stars' happiest-sounding star, and the easiest one to misread, because its readings describe a buffer rather than a talent.
天同 is usually rendered the Blessing Star, or the Star of Leisure. It sits five steps behind 紫微, the Emperor Star.
What this star means is computed, not judged: the same birth data always lands it in the same box — the sections below just read what that seat does in a life.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is 天同? | The Blessing Star — ease, restoration, being supported |
| Where does it sit? | Five steps behind 紫微, in the zodiac order 子 → 亥 |
| Strongest seats | 巳, 亥 in 庙; 子, 申 in 旺 |
| Weakest seats | 午 in 陷; 丑, 未 in 不得地 |
| What does it describe? | How much friction the chart absorbs before it reaches you |
| What does it cost? | Push — the star is not built to fight for its own outcome |
| Which stars can share its palace? | 太阴, 巨门, 天梁 — or it sits alone |
天同 belongs to the 紫微 series, and like every star in that series it has no placement rule of its own. Its offset is −5.
| Star | Series | Offset from 紫微 |
|---|---|---|
Two consequences follow from that single number, and both matter more for 天同 than for the stars before it.
Its palace-mates are not a matter of chance. Because 紫微 and 天府 run on fixed offsets, only three main stars can ever share a palace with 天同: 太阴, 巨门 and 天梁. Every other arrangement means it stands alone. That is why the classical combinations attached to this star are so few — the geometry does not permit more.
Its brightness is fixed by the seat, not by the year. Wherever the Emperor lands, 天同 lands five places behind, and each of those twelve seats carries one grade. Nothing about the birth year changes the grade; only the transformation layer moves.
Twelve Emperor seats, twelve 天同 seats, each with a fixed brightness rating.
| 紫微 at | 天同 at | Brightness | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 子 | 未 | 不得地 | Comfort without cover: ease that has to be earned back |
| 丑 | 申 | 旺 | Quiet strength — supported and steady, low drama |
| 寅 | 酉 | 平和 | Gentle and unremarkable: a life without sharp edges |
| 卯 | 戌 | 平和 | Soft reading, thin margin; the buffer works until it is tested |
| 辰 | 亥 | 庙 | The strongest seat for ease — the classical "fortune at the gate" position |
| 巳 | 子 | 旺 | Ease plus depth; often read as warmth that others rely on |
| 午 | 丑 | 不得地 | The contested pairing: inner ease, outer friction |
| 未 | 寅 | 利益 | Ease shared with a guardian star: late-blooming support |
| 申 | 卯 | 平和 | The classic "lazy luck" seat — things arrive without forcing |
| 酉 | 辰 | 平和 | Mild comfort, mild risk; the buffer needs maintenance |
| 戌 | 巳 | 庙 | A second peak seat: help arrives structurally, not by chance |
| 亥 | 午 | 陷 | Ease in a hard seat — the star is at home nowhere here |
Two seats dominate the reading. 亥 and 巳 both carry the top grade, and the interesting part is what that rules out: 午, another fire seat, grades 陷, while 子 — water, the star's own element — grades only 旺. Brightness here is a lookup keyed to the branch, not a rule you can re-derive from star and branch elements — which is exactly why two engines can agree completely about where the star lands and still differ on how to grade the seat it lands in.
Take a chart built from lunar 1990, fourth month, fifteenth day, 22:00. Our engine places the Emperor at 午 with brightness 庙 and 天府 mirrored to 戌.
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
Because the Emperor took 午, 天同 could only have taken 丑 — there is no other possibility for that birth data. And 丑 is one of the two seats where 天同 shares its palace with 巨门, so this chart's Blessing Star is not standing alone: it is the soft star sitting next to the one associated with scrutiny and argument.
The year stem here is 庚, and 庚 is the stem that hands 天同 化忌 — the transformation usually described as the star losing its own protection. So the same placement that reads as steady comfort in another chart reads here as comfort that leaks: support arriving, then being spent on someone else's problem. The star did not move. The seat did not move. One field — the year stem — changed the reading completely.
| Strengths | Blind spots |
|---|---|
| Lowers the temperature of any room it enters | Mistakes comfort for a plan |
| Recovers quickly; rarely carries a grudge | Leaves hard decisions for someone else to make |
| Attracts help without asking for it | Underestimates the cost of the help it receives |
| Good at being content with enough | Can sit in a bad situation long past its expiry |
| Natural mediator, dislikes open conflict | Avoids the one conversation that would settle things |
One mechanism, seen from both sides. A star that absorbs friction will also fail to generate any — and the readings attached to it say the same thing twice: the ease is real, and the passivity is the same trait.
The mistake most people make with 天同 is to read it as a quantity of good luck. What the seat table actually encodes is how much friction reaches you — and that is a structural property of the chart, not a prediction.
Three things follow from that framing.
It is about the margin, not the outcome. A strong 天同 seat is not read as a life without problems; it is read as a life where problems arrive having already been softened. The difference matters practically, because a wide margin is invisible until something tests it, and the tests are exactly what the star does not describe.
It pairs badly with pressure and well with steady work. In our reference data, the palace readings for this star cluster around the same instruction: environments that stay stable suit it, high-pressure and high-competition settings do not. That is a description of fit, not a prescription — the star says where the buffer holds, and the rest of the chart says what to do with it.
Its trouble is visible late. Because the failure mode is drift rather than a blow-up, weak 天同 seats get read through outcomes people notice after the fact: work that never quite started, a situation stayed in a year too long, a body signal ignored. One of the palace readings in our data says it plainly for the health palace — the risk with this star is not the symptom but the delay in reporting it.
| Variable | What it controls | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Position (which branch) | Where the ease sits | Fixed arithmetic — one seat per chart, never in dispute |
| Brightness (庙 … 陷) | How the star behaves in that seat | A lookup keyed to the branch |
| Transformation (禄 / 权 / 科 / 忌) | What the year stem attaches | Changes by birth year, not by date |
天同 takes three of the four transformations: 化禄 under 丙, 化权 under 丁, and 化忌 under 庚. The readings attached to those three are unusually consistent — 化禄 is described as ease compounding, 化权 as the lazy star being given a reason to move, and 化忌 as the protection being spent on something else.
The fourth slot is the honest part. Whether 天同 ever takes 化科 is a point where the tables disagree. Our engine assigns the 庚 slot's 化科 to 太阴 and the 化忌 to 天同; a circulated variant assigns both 化科 and 化忌 to 天同 for that same stem. Both versions are in wide use. Positions are arithmetic and cannot differ; transformation tables are conventions, and here is one place where the convention itself is unsettled — worth knowing before comparing two readings of the same chart and concluding that one of them is wrong.
Because the offsets are fixed, only four arrangements are possible.
| Configuration | What it settles into |
|---|---|
| 天同 + 巨门 | Ease under scrutiny — the outer picture is harder than the inner one |
| 天同 + 天梁 | Support with seniority: the slow, improving curve, strongest later |
| 天同 + 太阴 | Warmth with depth — the pairing most often read as gentleness |
| 天同 alone | The purest form: ease with nobody to lean on and nothing to dilute it |
Two modifiers change the temperature rather than the position: with 火星 the ease turns into uneven temper — long patience, sudden flare — and with 文昌 the star's softness reads as refinement rather than slackness.
Run the same birth data next month and the star lands in the same box at the same rating. The seat is computed; only the wording around it moves.

What does the 天同 star mean in Zi Wei Dou Shu? 天同 (Tian Tong), the Blessing Star, is the main star of ease, restoration and support. It describes how much friction a chart absorbs before it reaches the person rather than a promise of good fortune, and it is placed five steps behind 紫微, the Emperor Star.
Is 天同 a lucky star? It is the star whose readings sound the luckiest, but it describes a margin rather than an outcome. Its strong seats are read as problems arriving pre-softened; its weak seats as the same problems arriving at full strength.
Which seats are strongest for 天同? 巳 and 亥 carry the top grade, with 子 and 申 one step below. 午 grades lowest, and 丑 and 未 carry a lower grade as well — notably, the fire seats 巳 and 午 sit at opposite ends, which is why the grade cannot be derived from a simple element rule.
What does 天同 in the Life palace mean? The placement is read as a person who is easy to be around, supported more often than they realise, and slow to press their own case. How far that plays out depends on the seat's brightness and the transformation the birth year attaches.
Why is 天同 said to pair with 巨门 or 天梁? Because the offsets are fixed, only 太阴, 巨门 and 天梁 can ever share a palace with it. The 巨门 pairing reads as inner ease with outer friction; the 天梁 pairing as support that improves with age.
Does 天同 ever take 化科? That depends on which transformation table you use. Our engine assigns 丙 to 化禄, 丁 to 化权 and 庚 to 化忌 for this star, with 化科 going to 太阴 under 庚; a circulated variant gives 天同 both 化科 and 化忌 under 庚. The seat is arithmetic; the transformation table is a convention, and this is one slot where conventions differ.
