Most stars in the system are read as a quality a person carries. 廉贞 (lián zhēn) is read as a boundary — the line a person keeps, tests or crosses. It closes the Emperor series, and it is the only main star whose readings point two ways at once: the same seat is described as the enforcer of the rules and as the place where the rules get bent.
廉贞 is usually rendered the Officer, or the Star of Chastity. It sits eight steps behind 紫微, the Emperor Star.
What this star means is computed, not judged: the same birth data always lands it in the same box — the sections below just read what that seat does in a life.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is 廉贞? | The Officer — the line itself: discipline, constraint, and what happens at the edge of it |
| Where does it sit? | Eight steps behind 紫微, in the 子 → 亥 order |
| Strongest seats | 寅, 申 (both 庙) |
| Weakest seats | 巳, 亥 (both 陷) |
| What does it describe? | Whether a line holds — not a fixed virtue |
| What does it cost? | Volatility: the same seat can read as talent or as trouble |
| Which stars can share its palace? | 天府, 贪狼, 天相, 七杀, 破军 — or it sits alone |
廉贞 is the sixth and last star of the 紫微 series, and like every star in that series it has no placement rule of its own. Its offset is −8.
| Star | Series | Offset from 紫微 |
|---|---|---|
An offset of −8 is the same position as +4. So however the Emperor is placed, the Officer is always four branches along from it — the two ends of the series, locked together.
Because the offsets inside a series never repeat, no other 紫微-series star can ever share a palace with 廉贞. Every neighbour it can have comes from the other series — and there are only five of them.
Twelve Emperor seats, twelve Officer seats. The middle column is where it goes; the last column tells you who it has for company.
| 紫微 at | 廉贞 at | Brightness | Shares with | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
The line with a treasurer: administrative, cool-headed |
The dimmest Officer seat: appetite and rule in one box |
Steady and unremarkable: order kept quietly |
Discipline with muscle: decisive, hard-edged |
The top seat, and it stands alone |
The line inside a reorganisation: rules under change |
The same administrative pairing, second seat |
| 未 | 亥 | 陷 | 贪狼 | The second dim seat, mirror of 巳 |
Order kept quietly, second seat |
Discipline with muscle, second seat |
The second top seat, and it also stands alone |
Reorganisation, second seat |
Two things stand out. The strongest seats are 寅 and 申 — and they are exactly the two where 廉贞 has no company. The weakest are 巳 and 亥, and both are seats where 贪狼 shares the palace.
For most stars the seat grade looks like an independent lookup. For 廉贞 it is the same table read twice: each seat pairs it with exactly one other main star, and the pairing fixes the grade.
| Company | Grade | Seats |
|---|---|---|
The pattern is complete: the office is graded best when it stands alone, mid-range beside the stabilisers (天府, 天相) and the enforcers (七杀), and worst beside 贪狼.
The lookup does not say which way the influence runs — whether the neighbour colours the grade, or the grade is simply defined by the pairing. It records only that the two columns always travel together. That matters practically: two charts can put 廉贞 in the same palace name, in two different seats, and read nothing alike — not because the reading is loose, but because the pairing changes with the seat.
Take a chart built from lunar 1990, fourth month, fifteenth day, 22:00. Our engine places the Emperor at 午 with brightness 庙 and mirrors 天府 to 戌.
Since 廉贞 is always four branches along from 紫微, this chart's Officer can only be at 戌 — there is no other possibility for that birth data.
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
| shares the palace with | 天府 — 庙 |
In this chart the Officer is not the star of trouble; it is the star of administration. It sits in the Career palace, beside the Treasury star — the pairing the tables read as turning the irregular into the regular. The star's own career note in our reference data points the same way: art, design, legal work and public relations, the trades whose business is boundaries.
The birth year here is 庚, and 庚 attaches nothing to 廉贞. So this is a chart with a whole Officer and a silent transformation layer: the star is defined entirely by where it landed and who it landed with.
Change one field — hold the chart, change only the year stem — and the same seat reads differently.
| Year stem | Slot | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 廉贞 化禄 | 禄 is the lighter slot: influence that converts into income, with a note about grey areas |
| 丙 | 廉贞 化忌 | 忌 is the heaviest slot in the table — the same star read as entanglement |
The seat did not move. The grade did not change. A single field decides which of the four slots the year hands to this star, and for 廉贞 there are only two of them.
The reason 廉贞 is hard to summarise is that it is read under two labels that sound like opposites: the Officer, and the star of attraction. One set of notes describes discipline, law and restraint; another describes the person everyone notices, and the trouble that follows the noticing.
Read those as contradictory and the star makes no sense. Read them as one idea and it does: 廉贞 is not a quantity of virtue or a quantity of trouble. It is the presence of a line and the person's relationship to it. A bright seat is not read as "safe" — it is read as the line held with talent and presence. A dim seat is not read as "doomed" — it is read as the same line held unsteadily.
Our reference reading for 廉贞 in the Life palace says it without hedging: decisive likes and dislikes, talent and presence, but stability is the soft spot; a strong seat gets the talent seen, a weak seat reads as swings and self-cancelling. Not a mediocre chart — a tightrope one.
Three things follow.
Nothing in the star separates the career from the risk. The seat that supports legal, design or media work is the same seat associated with a reputation problem. What separates them is the rest of the chart — the palace, the neighbours, the transformation — not the star on its own.
The heaviest transformation belongs to this star. Across the whole table, no other slot carries a heavier note than 廉贞 化忌 — and it is a note about the table, not a prediction about any person. The star that defines the line is the star whose failure mode is described at full volume.
It is read beside the stars that remake things. 天府 and 天相 pair with it as reform — order absorbing what would otherwise be irregular. 七杀, 破军 and 贪狼 pair with it as transition. Either way the Officer is read at a crossing point, which is exactly where a line gets tested.
| Variable | What it controls | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Position (which branch) | Where the Officer sits | Fixed arithmetic — one seat per chart, never in dispute |
| Brightness (庙 … 陷) | How the star behaves in that seat | A lookup keyed to the branch, and here also a shadow of the neighbour |
| Transformation (禄 / 权 / 科 / 忌) | What the year stem attaches | Changes by birth year, not by date |
Two honest notes, because they are the kind of thing that makes two readings of the same chart look like a factual disagreement when it is not.
One seat carries two labels. Our engine grades 廉贞 in 辰 as 利益. A descriptive table in the same dataset grades that same seat 得地. The placement is identical in both; only the label differs, and the label is a convention, not a computation.
This star takes two slots, not four. In our engine's transformation table, 廉贞 receives only 化禄 (under 甲) and 化忌 (under 丙). The same dataset also carries school variants that give it 权 and 科. Positions are arithmetic and cannot differ between engines. Transformation tables are conventions, and this is a star where the conventions are unusually thin.
Run the same birth data next month and the Officer lands in the same box, at the same rating, beside the same star. The conclusion holds; only the wording around it moves.

What does the 廉贞 star mean in Zi Wei Dou Shu? (Lian Zhen), the Officer Star, is the main star of boundaries — discipline, constraint and the moment a line is tested. It is read as a person's relationship to limits rather than as a fixed virtue, and it is placed eight steps behind 紫微, the Emperor Star.
Is 廉贞 a good star or a bad star? Neither label fits. Its readings describe the presence of a line, and the same seat that supports legal, design or media work is the seat associated with a reputation problem. What separates the two is the palace, the neighbour and the transformation, not the star by itself.
Which seats are strongest for 廉贞? 寅 and 申 carry the top grade, and both are seats where 廉贞 stands alone. 巳 and 亥 grade lowest, and both are seats where 贪狼 shares the palace. 辰, 戌, 丑 and 未 grade 利益; 子, 午, 卯 and 酉 grade 平和.
Why does 廉贞's grade depend on the star beside it? Because the offsets are fixed, each of the twelve seats pairs 廉贞 with exactly one other main star, and each pairing carries one grade. Whether the neighbour colours the grade or the grade is defined by the pairing, the lookup itself does not say — it only records that the two always travel together.
What does 廉贞 in the Life palace mean? It is read as someone with decisive likes and dislikes, talent and presence, whose soft spot is stability. A strong seat gets that talent seen; a weaker one reads as swings and self-cancelling. The rest of the chart decides how far it plays out.
Does 廉贞 take all four transformations? Not in our engine's table, which assigns it only 化禄 under 甲 and 化忌 under 丙. The same dataset also carries variants that give it 权 and 科. Positions are arithmetic and cannot differ; transformation tables are conventions, and this star's conventions are unusually thin.
