Should I Change My Job? Career Timing in Zi Wei Dou Shu

Most people ask "should I change my job" at the wrong layer. They read one bad quarter as a signal about the role, when the chart is usually answering a different question: is this the season for the move, and which way does the chart already lean.

In Zi Wei Dou Shu that question has a home. Your work life is read from the Career Palace (官禄宫), but the decision to move is never read from that one box alone — it sits in a small set of palaces that have to agree before a change reads as a real turn rather than restlessness.

What your chart says here is computed, not judged: the same birth data always lands the same stars in the same box, and the sections below just read what that placement does when you put a job decision next to it.

The short version

QuestionAnswer
Which palace answers this? The Career Palace (官禄宫) first, then its opposite, the Spouse Palace (夫妻宫), and the two other money palaces
What makes a chart read as "move"?A transformation (四化) landing in the Career Palace or its three-squares, plus the decade palace switching to Career, Wealth or Travel
What makes it read as "stay"?A settled Career Palace with no active transformation in the current decade — the friction is in you, not the seat
Where does the timing come from? The current decade (大限) and the current year (流年), not the natal chart alone
Can the chart name a job?No. It names the environment you last in — structure, people, pace — not a title
Is 化忌 in the Career Palace bad?It is an assignment, not a verdict: friction that points at what the decade is asking you to develop

Why a job change is a timing question

A natal chart is a fixed map: run the same birth data again and the same stars land in the same twelve boxes. Nothing about "should I quit" is decided by that map, because the map does not move. What moves is the window you are looking through.

Two layers sit on top of the map. The decade (大限) slides a ten-year window across it, one palace at a time; the year (流年) slides a smaller one on top of that. When your current decade reaches the Career Palace, work becomes the decade's front door — that is when job decisions stop being background noise. When it reaches the Travel Palace, the same chart starts asking about moving rather than striving.

So the first honest question is not "is this job wrong for me." It is "which palace is my decade standing in right now."

The three palaces behind the question

A job decision is read from a set, not a single box. Three palaces do most of the work, and a fourth sets the context.

PalaceWhat it answers for a job decision
Career (官禄宫)Direction and standing — the environment and kind of work you last in, and how you handle authority
Wealth (财帛宫)Whether the move is really about money, and how income flows for you
Life (命宫)Capacity — how much change the chart is built to carry at once
Spouse (夫妻宫)The palace opposite Career, so it carries the work-life cost of any move

Read them together and the shape of the answer appears. A career that looks "stuck" with a strong Wealth Palace is often a pay question wearing a career costume. A career that looks fine with 化忌 sitting in it is usually a decade asking for a different attitude to the same job, not a resignation.

Stars that read as a move

The main star in the Career Palace sets the theme. Some seats lean toward change and some lean toward holding a line.

StarCareer themeReads as
破军 (Po Jun)Territory redrawnThe rebuild kind — relocates, restructures, starts over
七杀 (Qi Sha)Decisive, high-stakesThe clean break; not a consensus-builder
天机 (Tian Ji)Strategy and analysisConstant adjustment; pivots more than it quits
紫微 (Zi Wei)Centre and commandThe positional rise — grows by taking on more authority
武曲 (Wu Qu)Disciplined executionFinance and operations; earns through capability
廉贞 (Lian Zhen)Rules and peopleLaw, management, roles that mix the two
太阳 (Tai Yang)Visible and public-facingShines when seen; struggles in a back room
天梁 (Tian Liang)Protection and seniorityAnchors an institution; a slow, trusted climb

That table is not a menu. It says which way a given chart already leans, so a move with the grain costs less than a move against it.

What the decade and the year change

Timing is where most self-read charts go wrong, because people look for the event in the natal chart. The natal chart is the map; the decade and the year decide which corner of it is lit.

The mechanism that ties them together is the Four Transformations (四化). Each birth year's stem names four stars to transform, one each into 化禄 (inflow), 化权 (control), 化科 (recognition) and 化忌 (friction). Whatever palaces those stars occupy get switched on for that year.

TransformationLanding in the Career Palace, it reads as
化禄Draw — a role that pays, pulls, or opens a door
化权Taking the wheel — a promotion, or the appetite to run something
化科Being seen — a name that opens rooms
化忌Friction to work through — the decade's assignment, not a sentence

Hold 化忌 correctly. It is the one people fear and the one that most often answers the question. Friction in the Career Palace for a decade is not "do not work." It is the chart pointing at the thing you keep tripping over, and asking whether staying is how you solve it or how you avoid it.

A worked example

Here is a chart produced by our own engine. Birth data: lunar year 1990, fourth month, fifteenth day, 22:00, male.

PalaceBranchMain stars
Life 命宫午紫微 (庙)
Career 官禄戌廉贞, 天府 (庙)
Wealth 财帛寅武曲 (得地), 天相 (庙)
Travel 迁移子贪狼 (旺)
Spouse 夫妻辰七杀

Put the job question to this chart. The Career Palace sits at 戌 carrying 廉贞 beside 天府 — rules-and-people next to storage. That is a structured environment: an institution, a firm, a system with a hierarchy to climb, not a solo leap into the unknown. The engine marks 廉贞 here as 利益, and grades the seat 庙 (exalted) in the 天府 column.

Now the timing layer. The year 1990 is 庚, and in the transformation table we use a 庚 year transforms 太阳, 武曲, 太阴 and 天同 — which lands 化权 (control) on the Wealth Palace, not the Career Palace. Read plainly: in a 庚-year chart, the drive to take control shows up on the money side before it shows up at work. For this person, "should I change my job" is often really "I want more command of my income" — and the fix may live inside the current role rather than across the street.

That is the whole point of reading the set. The same seven words land differently depending on which palace is lit.

The question under the question

Three phrasings hide the real ask often enough to be worth naming.

"Should I change my job?" — if the Career Palace is settled and no transformation touches it this decade, the tension is usually in the Life Palace, and the chart is describing a person who wants movement more than a job that is wrong.

"When should I change?" — this one has an answer the chart can actually give, because decade and year are computed. It is the timing question, and it is the one worth asking.

"Will the new job be better?" — no chart answers this as a verdict. It answers which environment you last in, and leaves the choosing to you. The placement describes a default, not a fixed outcome.

How to read your own career move

  1. Place your Life Palace 命宫. You need your birth date and hour — the palace moves with the hour.
  2. Find the Career Palace 官禄宫, four seats from Life on the wheel, and note the main star or star pair that sits there.
  3. Check the three money palaces together — Career, Wealth and Property — so you can tell a pay question from a direction question.
  4. Mark any transformation (四化) landing in the Career Palace or its three-squares this year.
  5. Find your current decade (大限) and the palace it stands in. If it is Career, Wealth or Travel, a change is on the decade's agenda. If not, the urge is more likely internal.
  6. Read the star theme against your real options — is the move with the grain of this chart, or against it?

Run the same birth data again next week and the stars land in the same boxes and the same decade stands in the same palace. The seat is computed; only the wording around it moves.

Try it free: enter your birth details at askziwei.com, open the Career Palace, and see which star sits there — then watch the same seat come back every time you ask.

FAQ

Does Zi Wei Dou Shu tell me which job to take? No. It reads the environment and pace you last in — structured, public-facing, independent, high-stakes — and the timing of turns. The title and the offer stay yours to choose.

How do I know if this is a good year to change jobs? Look at where your current decade (大限) and current year (流年) point, and whether any transformation (四化) lands in the Career Palace. That combination sets whether a change is on the agenda, not the natal chart alone.

What does 化忌 in the Career Palace mean for a job move? It marks friction the period is asking you to work through — often the strongest reason to change something, and not a reason to be afraid. It is a note about the season, not a verdict about you.

Can a chart show that I should stay instead of leaving? Yes, and it does so quietly: a settled Career Palace with no active transformation in the current decade usually points at your relationship with the work, not the work itself.

Does my hour of birth matter for a career reading? It matters for the Life Palace, and the Life Palace sets every other box. A date alone is not enough, because 命宫 moves with the hour.
