The Seven Killings Star (七杀) in Zi Wei Dou Shu: Meaning and Placement

Most stars in the system are read as a quality a person carries. 七杀 (qī shā) is read as a threshold — the point where weighing things up turns into acting. It is the sixth star of the 天府 series, and its English rendering, the Seven Killings Star, sounds far more violent than the star reads: our reference data ranks it 将星, the general's star, with Metal as its element and cutting decisions as its theme.

七杀 is usually rendered the Seven Killings Star; older translations say the Marshal, or the General. In the same breath as its name, it is the one main star the year stem cannot reach at all — a fact the sections below return to more than once.

What the star means here is computed, not judged: the same birth data always lands it in the same box, and the sections below read what that box does in a life.

The short version

QuestionAnswer
What is 七杀?The Seven Killings — decisiveness, command, and the will to act while others deliberate
Where does it sit?Six steps on from 天府 — and 天府 itself mirrors 紫微
Grades庙 at 丑, 寅, 辰, 未, 申, 戌; 旺 at 子, 卯, 午, 酉; 平和 at 巳, 亥
Lowest seat平和 — the table never drops to 陷 for this star
Which stars can share its palace?紫微, 廉贞, 武曲 — or it sits alone at six seats
Can the year stem reach it?No. It is one of three main stars with no slot in the transformation table
Its trine partners贪狼 and 破军, always

It is not placed. It is dragged.

The Seven Killings has no placement rule of its own. It belongs to the second series — the 天府 series — and every star in that series takes its position from 天府's own box.

StarSeriesOffset from 天府

And 天府 is not placed either. It is the mirror of the Emperor Star across the 寅–申 axis: put the Emperor at 午 and the Treasury lands at 戌 — whichever bureau and birth day produced the Emperor in the first place.

Two consequences follow from that arithmetic.

The Seven Killings is never alone in its trine. Its offset (+6), 贪狼's (+2) and 破军's (+10) are always four branches apart — the 三合 distance, the trine, in a ring of twelve. So the three stars our reference data groups as 杀破狼 always occupy the three corners of one triangle, and that is the group's whole meaning: the chart's drive, appetite and demolition always arrive together.

The stars it can stand beside are limited to three. Because no offset inside a series repeats, no 天府-series star can ever share a palace with it — not 贪狼, not 破军, not 天府. Every possible companion comes from the 紫微 series, and only three of those six ever land there: 紫微, 廉贞 and 武曲.

Where the Seven Killings lands

Twelve Emperor seats, twelve Seven Killings seats. The middle column is where it goes; the last column names the company.

紫微 at天府 at七杀 atBrightnessShares with

Six of the twelve seats leave the star alone, and those six are the same six that leave 贪狼 alone — because the two stars stand four branches apart, the seats where one is paired are never the seats where the other is.

Three grades, and a table that never falls

GradeBranchesWho is there
庙丑, 辰, 未, 戌, 寅, 申廉贞 at 丑 and 未; nobody at 辰, 戌, 寅, 申
旺子, 午, 卯, 酉武曲 at 卯 and 酉; nobody at 子 and 午
平和巳, 亥紫微

The table is unusually flat: this star never grades 陷 or 得地, and half of its twelve seats carry the top grade. The single dip is the 巳–亥 pair, and both of those seats are the ones where 紫微 shares the palace — the pairing the reference data's combination table calls 紫杀 and names, from this star's side, as its best pairing overall.

That is a real tension, and worth stating plainly: the same dataset grades those two seats lowest for this star and calls their combination the best it has. One column measures how the star behaves in a seat; the other measures what the pairing produces. They are different questions, and both answers can stand.

Nothing in the table says which way the influence runs. Whether the neighbour colours the grade, or the grade simply travels with the pairing, the lookup does not say — it records only that the two columns always move together. Two charts can put the star in the same palace name, at two different seats, and read nothing alike.

A worked example

Take a chart built from lunar 1990, fourth month, fifteenth day, 22:00, a male birth. Our engine places the Life palace at 午, fixes the bureau at 木三 (Wood 3), and from that bureau and the fifteenth day of the month puts 紫微 at 午 with brightness 庙.

StepResult
Life palace (命宫)午 — from the birth month and hour
Bureau (五行局)木三 — Wood 3
紫微午 — 庙
天府 (紫微 mirrored)戌 — 庙
七杀 (天府 + 6)辰 — 庙, alone
Shares the palace withnobody among the 14 main stars
Body palace (身宫)辰 — the same box
Year stem庚 — and no stem ever attaches anything to this star

For that birth data the star can only land at 辰. There is no other possibility, it falls in the Spouse palace (夫妻), and the chart's Body palace lands on the same box — so the placement the reference reading calls a career-and-independence star is also where this chart's second anchor sits. Our reference reading for it in the Spouse palace flags twists in the road and advises marrying later; the note for it in the Life palace is blunter still, and reads as the star's whole character in one line: strong, self-reliant, career-first, decisive to the point that the same trait is a double-edged blade.

Its trine is where the group completes: the two stars standing four branches away on either side, which the chart's stem can reach even though this star stays untouched — the table below lists which stems do it.

The one main star the year stem cannot touch

The engine's transformation table has ten rows, one per year stem, and each row hands out four slots: 化禄, 化权, 化科, 化忌. Across all ten rows, this star appears zero times. It is not alone in that: 天府 and 天相 are the other two main stars absent from every row — the three stars the site's full stem-to-star reference table names as the ones that never take a transformation.

So a chart can run its year stem through all ten values and never once reach the Seven Killings. What the stem does instead is move the two stars in its trine:

Year stemSlotStar it reaches
甲化权破军
癸化禄破军
戊化禄贪狼
己化权贪狼
癸化忌贪狼

That asymmetry is the practical reading. When a decade or a year looks decisive, the layer that responds is not the Seven Killings: it is the appetite and the demolition standing in the same triangle, which the stem colours and this star does not.

What the star reads as, palace by palace

The star is half the reading; the palace supplies the target. These are our reference readings, compressed.

PalaceThe reference reading
LifeStrong, self-reliant, career-first; the note reads the same trait as a blade that cuts both ways, and advises a later marriage
CareerWork that rewards nerve: military, police, engineering, entrepreneurship
WealthBold and volatile, made by acting rather than hoarding; beside 禄存 or 左辅 it is read as turning into specialised, cumulative wealth
SpouseTwists in the road and a strong-willed partner; the note advises a later marriage
TravelVery strong at striking out independently and building a life away from home
FriendsCapable, large-spirited contacts — useful more than frequent
PropertyProperty arrives in swings: little early, sudden purchases later
FortuneAn inner spirit that refuses to accept defeat
HealthThe Metal star's territory: the reference notes injury and surgery

What moves, and what does not

VariableWhat it controlsHow to read it
Position (which branch)Where the Seven Killings sitsFixed arithmetic — one seat per chart, never in dispute
Brightness (庙, 旺, 平和)How the star behaves in that seatA lookup keyed to the branch; never 陷 for this star
TransformationWhat the year stem attachesNothing — no stem in the table reaches this star

Where the tables disagree

Two honest notes, because they are the kind of thing that makes two readings of the same chart look like a factual disagreement when it is not.

The reading warns about a transformation the table never assigns. Our reference entry for this star in the Life palace ends on 化忌, describing it as the case to guard against. The transformation block in that same entry states that the star takes no 化忌, the engine's table gives it no slot at all, and the published stem-to-star table lists it under none of the four marks. Read the warning as a note about a school variant, not as an assignment: where prose and table part company, the table decides what a stem actually does.

Its name describes less than its data. The standard English rendering is the Seven Killings Star, which reads as violence. The entry behind this page ranks the star as the general's star, and its handling of that same palace is about command, self-reliance and tolerance for risk. The name is a metaphor for cutting cleanly so a decision can be made; the data is about decisiveness, and the two are worth keeping apart when a chart is read.

How to read your own Seven Killings

  1. Place the Life palace. This needs the hour as well as the date; 命宫 moves with the hour.
  2. Find your element bureau from the Life palace's own stem-and-branch pair.
  3. Locate 紫微 from the bureau and your lunar day of birth.
  4. Mirror it to 天府 across the 寅–申 axis.
  5. Count six branches on from 天府. That box is 七杀.
  6. Read the grade: 丑, 寅, 辰, 未, 申 or 戌 is top; 巳 or 亥 is the lowest seat this star can take.
  7. Name the company: 紫微, 廉贞, 武曲 — or nobody.
  8. Read its trine: the other two corners hold 贪狼 and 破军, and the year stem moves those even when it cannot move this star.

Run the same birth data next month and the Seven Killings lands in the same box, at the same grade, beside the same star. The conclusion holds; only the wording around it moves.

FAQ

What does the 七杀 star mean in Zi Wei Dou Shu? 七杀 (Qi Sha), the Seven Killings Star, is the main star of decisiveness and command — the point where weighing things up turns into acting. It is placed six branches on from 天府, and our reference data ranks it as the general's star, with Metal as its element.

Is the Seven Killings Star a bad star? No. The English name reads violent; the reference data does not. It ranks the star as a general's star and describes its Life-palace reading in terms of self-reliance, career focus and extreme decisiveness — a trait the same note calls a blade that cuts both ways.

Does the Seven Killings take any of the four transformations? No. Our engine's table gives it no slot under any of the ten stems, and 天府 and 天相 are the only other main stars in the same position. Whatever a decade or year does, the layer that responds is the rest of its trine — 贪狼 and 破军 — not this star.

Which seats are strongest for the Seven Killings? 丑, 寅, 辰, 未, 申 and 戌 all grade 庙; 子, 卯, 午 and 酉 grade 旺. Only 巳 and 亥 drop to 平和, and those are the two seats where 紫微 shares the palace.

What is the 杀破狼 group? 七杀, 贪狼 and 破军 — three stars whose offsets from 天府 are +6, +2 and +10, which always leaves them four branches apart, the trine distance. They are never scattered across a chart, and they are read as one movement: nerve, appetite and demolition.

Can 七杀 share a palace with 贪狼? No. Both belong to the 天府 series and their offsets differ, so they can never occupy the same palace. They always stand four branches apart — the same triangle, never the same box.
